Marelle / hopscotch

Région de Balaka.

Les enfants semblent heureux. Ils jouent à la marelle et l'un d'eux porte un tee-shirt de Batman. On pourrait croire que leur mode de vie est proche du notre. La réalité est bien différente. Le coton est la culture principale de cette région. Comme le tabac, cette matière première est achetée à un prix trop faible aux agriculteurs. Les gens sont enfermés dans la misère. Au village de Nbera, les décès dus à la famine sont fréquents en période de mousson. Le Malawi ne dispose pas d'une industrie de transformation du coton. Il sera tissé dans un lointain pays industrialisé. Et dans quelques mois, peut-être, il deviendra un tee-shirt de Batman...

Balaka region.

The children look happy. They are playing hopscotch and one of them is wearing a Batman T-Shirt. One could think we live similar lives. But reality is quite different. Cotton is the major growth of this region. Like tobacco, this raw material is bought at a too low price. People are retreated into misery. At Nbera village, people often die of starvation during the monsoon. Malawi doesn’t have any cotton processing industry. It will be woven in a distant country. And in a few months time it might become a Batman T-Shirt...
